Sorry. It’s been a hot minute since you last heard from me. Some of you haven’t received a single newsletter at all. WELP. My website had a meltdown, then I got ill, then my website had another meltdown, and then I got ill again. My body and CSS were playing a game of revolving doors. I do not recommend. Anyway, here we are today, bigger (so many new subscribers) and better (fuck coding, mate, basic Substack it is).
The general consensus is that while the metaverse is slowly capturing further interest and attention from a Web 2 audience, it’s crystal clear there’s still a looOOOOoooOOOOOOOng way to go before we enter mass adoption.
Hosting an event in Decentraland is great, but where are we actually going if only 30 people attend (true story), the screen keeps crashing (true story), and no one knows what they’re really doing (true story, again: Two weeks ago, you could catch me running up to a random stranger and ‘dancing’—more like awkwardly and stiffly wiggling—my virtual avatar in front of him. The stranger was no less than a very reputable senior editor at a very reputable publication who didn’t quite understand the advantage of remaining anonymous in the metaverse. Thankfully, I did, and he’s not a subscriber of my newsletter to learn otherwise).
Now, sceptics will take no time telling you, ‘I told you so… it’s all a scam and an ugly gimmick!’. But, sceptic I am not. Web 3 is complex. It requires greater skill, understanding and strategy than anything we have witnessed. Things will go tits-up. Projects will fail. People will tell you to shut the F up. That’s inevitable. We have a long journey ahead of us, and the only way to truly succeed is to miserably fail through trial & experimentation first.
Happy reading and learning—the wait won’t be too long next time!
